10 WAYS TO LOVE THE EARTH A LITTLE BETTER

Growing up, loving the Earth didn’t seem like a huge priority. In my mind, the Earth was just here for us to live on, and that was cool enough for me. It never really registered that we need to devote energy to taking care of it. I always had “too many other things” going on to really give it much thought. Let’s just say that I definitely took it for granted.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always been a nature girl, and love spending time outdoors, but I was living in a completely different reality. It took me moving to California and getting out on the ocean to see how badly we have treated our planet. From the visible chemicals that are constantly floating on top of the water, to the unfathomable amounts of garbage floating off the coast, to the deceased wildlife that is washed up on shore on a regular basis, I learned very quickly that my mentality needed to change. As much as I wish it was, I know that changing the world tomorrow isn’t an immedaite option. However, I firmly believe that if each of us can start becoming more consciously aware of the choices we are making on a daily basis, we will see a drastic shift in our collective consciousness.

Being that today is Earth Day, I’d like to share some of the ways that we can choose to start loving this planet just a little more.

10 WAYS TO LOVE THE EARTH A LITTLE BETTER

1.) Purchase a reusable water bottle/coffee mug

I used to buy huge cases of plastic water bottles and store them in my fridge until I moved by the ocean and saw the amount of bottle caps and bottles that accumulate in the ocean. Now, I use my hydroflask every single day. I’ve literally become obsessed with it!! I’m not much of a coffee drinker, but if you are, using a reusable mug instead of the plastic cups lids that they hand out at the coffee shop. If they offer paper cups, request that you have one without the plastic lid!

2.) Purchase a reusable straw.

The disposal of plastic straws is polluting our planet like crazy. Last year, a study showed that 8.3 billion straws polluted our world’s beaches. Whoa. There are so many companies out there that are working to fix this problem by making reusable straws. My personal favorite is SandCloud. Check it out here.

3.) Choose to minimize the use of single use plastic

UGH. This is the hardest one. I am completely guilty of storing leftovers in plastic bags. We can’t always be perfect, but we can be conscious. For so many years, I never was aware of the affects of plastic use on our oceans, because it didn’t seem to directly affect me. This is a completely naive mentality, and when I realized that approx. eight million tons of plastic flow into the ocean every year, I knew something needed to change. Reusable grocery bags are a great investment to make. Reuse storage containers for leftovers. No more plastic food ware…etc.

4.) Dress consciously

Buy from eco-friendly brands, and buy things that you will wear over and over. One of my favorite companies is Kate Hudson’s brand HappyxNature. 75% of their 2020 Spring and Summer collections are derived from recycled, organic, and responsibly-sourced fabrics. They are conscious with the factories and mills they choose to partner with, and are changing the way clothing is washed, dyed, and packaged.

Using non-toxic skincare products from companies like Primally Pure, are not only good for the environment, but also for the overall love of YOU and your body.

5.) Ground yourself

Take your shoes off and walk in the dirt, or on a beach and get connected with the Earth energy.

6.) Take a walk

Get outside and observe nature. How it is always moving, flowing, and all around you. Fresh air helps to expand your energy and sharpen the mind. The more oxygen you can supply the brain with, the better the brain function!

7.) Eat seasonal and local produce

Who doesn’t love a good farmer’s market?! Buying seasonal, local produce doesn’t only help support the local economy, but it always uses less energy for growing and transportation!

8.) Join a clean up effort

Search around your local community for park clean ups, beach clean ups, oceans clean ups, city clean ups! There are so many organizations out there that you can find that are always in need of volunteers. My local paddle board community will do occasional harbor clean ups, and it helps me stay focused on the mission!

9.) Plant a garden

I’m not a great plant mom, I’ll admit. However, planting a garden not only helps us to stay connected with nature, but also allows us to grow our own food source! Check out my friend Kate Daughdrill who made her own farm at her home in the heart of Detroit!

10.) Meditate

Whether you do it outside or inside, meditating on the unity of the world has such a powerful affect on the outcome on our worldly communities. It’s a beautiful way to send out and spread love to the world by connecting to the collective energy with a healing mentality.
